Science

Credited with an impressive record of discoveries and firsts, the StemCells, Inc. team has a distinguished heritage of scientific achievement in stem cell biology.

The Cells We Study

As stem cell science has evolved, our range of interests at StemCells, Inc. has expanded. While our therapeutic programs are focused exclusively on the transplantation of tissue-derived (adult) stem cells (HuCNS-SC® human neural stem cells) and progenitor cells (hLEC human liver engrafting cells), we believe there is utility in all types of stem cells and their progeny.

Today StemCells scientists study all three currently characterized types of stem cells: tissue-derived stem cells, embryonic stem (ES) cells and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, as well as progenitor cells. Molecular biology, genetic engineering and protein chemistry are core technologies for conducting this research. We consider all of these cell types as viable options both as cell-based therapies and as tools and technologies for drug discovery and development. Further scientific study will uncover the most appropriate and effective applications for each type of cell.
